Comments:   Hello Mr. Riley, I looking forward to see you perform at the Rockabilly Rave in June! Some years ago (2001) I saw you perform live on stage in Eindhoven, Netherlands - and this was one of the best rockabilly concerts I'd ever saw. And I have seen a lot of 50's performers in the recent years. I know that you have problems with your health - but I know although that you're a fighter, you will soon see better days! I wish all the best for you and your family. See you in June... Kind regards and greetings from Hamburg, Germany André

Comments:   Billy, I have several of your albums. The early Sun compilation which I love. But I want you to know that I enjoy your later stuff as much or more. Blue Collar Blues just blows me away. And Hot Damn is one of my all time favorite blues albums (and I have a LOT of albums) The last track, "Time Ain't On My Side" has got to be one of the saddest, most heartfelt songs I've ever heard. Just gets me right in the throat. That you wrote it, just makes it that much more special. I really want to see you in concert, never have. Come on out to California! Take care, and know that your music means a lot to many of us.

Comments:   Billy Lee Riley is a great talent, his Sun records are classics, as important as much of Presley's, Lewis', Perkins etc. As we can still see in the current pop charts, talent isn't always what gets you that hit record. I think it's mostly down to management and, whilst I love Elvis, I'm not so sure even he would have broken through without Colonel Tom whilst Jerry Lee was initially plugged to death by Sam Philips at Sun Records. Most people believe that's why Cash and Perkins left Sun, Jerry was getting all the attention. Maybe an element of that affected Billy's career. Injustice, Riley's Sun recordings just shine like gold.

I have never seen you live, but I know you would be GREAT!! Thank you for Red Hot, Flying Saucers, and all the other great rockabilly songs you have done through the years. KEEP ROCKIN'. Comments:   Dear Billy Lee Riley So glad you have this guest book on your site!!! I never heard your early music until I saw a movie called "Moonshine Highway", around ten years ago. I'd heard the songs before (even played some of them in my own band!) via Robert Gordon. In the movie, "My Gal is Red Hot" is the first song that gets played, and combined with the action in the movie, it just gave me goose-bumps! Needless to say, I became an instant fan. I had them order "Hot Damn" special here in Goderich, and I hope to get some of your other CD's asap. You sound GREAT!!! Yours Truly David W. McKee

Comments:   Hi Billy, Was browsing and was very pleased to find your web site. I was a teenager when Shelby Singleton started putting out the Sun reissues. Here in the UK they started releasing in about 1971. Your "Red Hot" was outstanding to me then, and I agree it was true rock'n'roll and not Rockabilly. The feel was so different with the flowing shuffle rhythm including piano. Only people with some real blues background could have made it sound that way. The interview was very enlightening, and I am pleased to learn from the horse's mouth about exactly which instruments you play/have played, that almost nothing was multi-tracked, that the pianists on Saucers and Red Hot were Lewis and Wilson. Now being an (ex) pianist myself & having loads of Lewis recordings it was plain to my ears that he played on the first but not the second. I got into blues from rock'n'roll & eventually taught myself piano, harmonica, drums & guitar but it was always for the love. You grew up with it & now it is obvious, even from your old Sun sides. They all have the feel of a blues man. Carl Perkins always had the blues in his songs and guitar solos, and he had the same background as you. Recently I picked up the harp again when on a business trip to Chicago. There was a mixed trio playing on the street - the guitarist doubled on harp & luckily he had some spare axes, so I played & sang after I don't know how many years. When I had to pack up and go for my flight home, this black gal from Louisiana hugged me like I was her son! The drummer was Robert, who played for Junior Wells for 10 years, the leader was Joan Baby who tours clubs etc and puts her stuff out on Princess Records. It was really something & all the draw notes made my chest hurt! I don't need to tell you, you need to be fit to play harp! The upshot is that we were playing the old blues songs - as you say, they're the best. I sang a real slow drag which was by Jimmy Rogers - one of Muddy's first side men - I love Jimmy's and Muddy's work - and like you, I love the Excello men too. Don't know why I'm spouting all this (it's your web site!) - it just seems I know you somehow & it all came out. Anyway, I hope you stay comfortable with your little business and being true to your art. Maybe if you come to Europe again I will come to a gig. Best wishes!

Lo and behold.........there must be a family relationship somewhere (in a backseat or barn) as your physical characteristics and mannerisms compared to my husband.....Polk Lee Riley III born in Memphis TN 1941. ..are astonishing. .....down to your jowls and ear lobes..even looking at the younger shots of you on the web, there are so many similarities. My husband's family background is rather vague...he doesn't know much history and does not know of any close relations alive. His father was Polk Lee Riley, Jr. born in Reyno Arkansas 1913....mother Frances Ellen Hawkins. Brother Bob Riley....an artist who worked and played hard in New Orleans in the 30s and 40s. Anyway, if you know of any relation, please respond....it would be a kick to find some family. Otherwise, it is great to have another handsome Riley on this earth! Sincerely...pj

We meet through Johnny Carlton and his band the " Escorts". I still have pictures of us playing outside on Johnny's carport. I still play for Church and fun, but I travel around the southeast selling air conditioning equipment. It is great to find a website where I could contact you. If you have a schedule of your concerts around Atlanta or Memphis, please e-mail me. I was in Batesville, AR. last week, but had no idea you lived in AR. I would live to visit with you sometime to catch up on the last 30 years.

We all were going on hard times. I remember cleaning the office of the Motown Exec. who used to count his jelly beans. Am I jolting your memory a bit???? When Mr.Riley's version of Red Hot began playing I immediatley thought to myself "who is this!?" I was so drawn in by the intensity of that song. Upon inspection of the CD case I discovered it was by Billy Lee Riley and His Little Green Men. I locked that name into my memory thinking "I have to seek out more of this man's music". Well this website is pretty darn extensive with information, everything I could have wanted!! Keep on rockin'!!!

I am ashamed to admit my interest in and knowledge of Mr. Riley was extremely limited until recently. My classmate and pal at Redondo Union High School, Tony Garnier, toured with Robert Gordon's band right after the remake of "Red Hot", which was my first exposure to that song. (After a few years in the Saturday Night Live Band Tony has been with Bob Dylan's band since I think 1992). About 10 years ago i got a K-Tel rockabilly collection (yes, i actually own a K-Tel record) specifically for an amazing Carl Perkins song called "Kitty Put Your Cat Clothes On". Also included was the Billy Lee Riley version of "Red Hot". K-Tel is NOT known for their extensive liner notes - there were none in this collection - so i read what little was written in my rock and roll reference books. But the recent Sun Records documentary re-ignited my curiosity in Mr. Riley and his music, so here i am. '92's "Blue Collar Blues" has some great stuff, but i read about, and am now searching for, a double-CD collection on the Charly-UK label called "Red Hot Riley". Anyone heard of it, anyone have it, anyone know where and how to find it? Thanks.

mr rilley i may be 26 but i hate the largest part of modern music. it has broken so far away from its roots the music is a joke and the lyrics or ironic. the best music came out before i was born but my mother intrudeced me to the better music of yesterday. i had the oppurtunity to see jerry lewis in green bay last may unfurtunatelly he cancelled due to illness. but you made the show well worth while and you handled things very well under the circumstances. the show was great and i bought shade tree at the show very happy w/ it and it stays true to its roots, its what music is all about.

I've heard only clips of it on various websites and would love to add it to my collection of your work. If you know of any location where it is still available or if it will be re-released soon is it possible to be notified via email? It would be appreciated more than you'd ever know! Thank you! You can come by car, boat, flying saucer or donkey's back -- but make sure you've got plenty of gas, because you don't wanna miss this show! Next Saturday -- June 23rd -- the original white boy bluesman "Red Hot" Billy Lee Riley is cooling his heels at the Center for Southern Folklore in downtown Memphis TN. Rock with him, baby -- the classic Sun sideman will be playing a rare acoustic guitar set -- and Oxford, MS-based Tyler Keith & the Preacher's Kids are opening the show at 8:00 sharp. Bring your wallets, coz the show costs $10 advance/ $12 at the door -- and there'll be plenty of cold beer on ice. C'mon down and check out the white boy blues at the Center's new-ish location in Pembroke Square at Peabody Place. Rock it, roll it, just do it -- mark your calendar coz there's no excuse for missing this one! Call 901.525.3655 for details, or check out www.southernfolklore.com for more info. Wanna learn more about the Preacher's Kids? Go to www.romeohood.com Wanna help with the Center for Southern Folklore's 14th Annual Music & Heritage Festival, to be held this Labor Day weekend? I just bought "Red Hot" and am totally floored!!! I keep playing "Rock with Me" over and over again. The song has inspired me to learn rockabilly licks on my Telecaster. Please come back to L.A.! I'll be the guy in the audience with the black "Sun Records" t-shirt. Culver Saloon sadly is no more so you'll have to find another venue.

WOW! Ril, I just read your interview and did you tell it like it was. My fondest memories performing in the 50's were with you. We had a lot of fun! I really appreciate your not forgetting your old Sax Man and the comments made. Even though most people have thought me to be long dead, you found me and let the world know that "Willie" is still around and might even play again. Who knows what might have happened if Red Hot & Flying Saucer Rock & Roll had been as big as their potential. You are still my favorite performer that I backed up both on recordings and live performances. I look forward to reading that book.

I heard my first Billy Lee Riley record in about 1977. It was Flying Saucers Rock n Roll. It came on a compilation along with Jerry Lee Lewis tracks and many others, including Warren Smith, Carl Perkins etc. I bought the Legendary Performers album then the Sun Sessions, both Charlie Label I think. Before we had the internet I often wondered what ever became of this wonderful performer. I had no idea fo where or who to write to. The world is now a much smaller place and I find that I have missed so many tours in England and Europe. When is the next Europe/England tour planned?

GREAT TO FIND ANOTHER PAGE DEDICATED TO BILLY LEE RILEY. BACK IN 1979 I HAD THE PLEASURE OF BEING HIS ORIGINAL BASS PLAYER IN EUROPE WHEN WE TOURED ENGLAND, GERMANY, FRANCE, HOLLAND AND BELGIUM WHERE WARREN SMITH WAS WAITING TO MEET BILLY FOR THE FIRST TIME IN AROUND 20 YEARS. THEY PUT ON A WONDERFUL SHOW. I MET UP WITH BILLY IN NEWCASTLE-UPON-TYNE IN MARCH THIS YEAR AND SAW HIM PUT ON ANOTHER TREMENDOUS PERFORMANCE. UNFORTUNATLY I CAN'T MAKE CHICAGO, NOV 6TH, BUT IF YOU DO AND YOU CATCH A WORD WITH HIM, PLEASE GIVE HIM MY BEST WISHES. I ALSO HAD THE PLEASURE OF BACKING SONNY BURGESS IN 1984 AT A ROCK N ROLL WEEKENDER AT WEYMOUTH, ENGLAND. IT WAS ONLY ONE SHOW AND ALTHOUGH HE PROBABLY DOESN'T REMEMBER JOHNNY AND THE ROCCOS FROM BACK THEN, PLEASE ALSO PASS ON MY BEST TO HIM. THANKS AGAIN FOR THE INTERESTING WEB SITE. KEEP ROCKIN' IAN

BILLY LEE RILEY IS ONE OF THE GREAT UNCROWNED KINGS OF ROCK AND ROLL. THE "GREAT MINDS"OF THE ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME SHOULD DO THEIR HOMEWORK AND NOMINATE SUCH LEGENDS, RATHER THAN NOMINATING SUCH NON-ROCK AND ROLLERS AS JOHNNY CASH, ARETHA FRANKLIN, ETC....
